Jordan Oil Terminals Company “JOTC”, owned by the Jordanian government, and Next Renewable Energy Company (Millennium Energy Industries “MEI”), a company registered in Amman, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, proudly announce the successful completion of the project for designing, installing, and operating a solar thermal heating system for two Heavy Fuel Oil “HFO” storage tanks in Aqaba HFO Terminal. This terminal is owned and operated by JOTC, which is the first company to offer storage and handling services for all types of petroleum and gas products throughout the Kingdom, serving all customers under an open-access principle.
The idea for this project was conceived to align with JOTC company's management policy of reducing operational costs and finding environmentally friendly and intelligent solutions. This endeavour relied on innovative scientific studies to devise sustainable and efficient solutions. MEI was selected to execute the project, as it is a national company that has received several international awards for its implementation of large-scale projects focused on preserving, conserving, and producing thermal energy using renewable solar energy.
H.E. Engineer Kholoud Mahasneh, General Manager of JOTC, emphasized the company's commitment to adopting the best solutions and adhering to the highest standards to ensure smooth operations, free from any future issues or defects. This dedication is driven by the goal of guarding the interests of all customers and stakeholders. Engineer Mahasneh expressed her delight in the successful completion of this project, which stands as one of the region's leading initiatives, particularly in utilizing renewable energy in traditional energy terminals. This project stands as the world's first of its kind, providing heavy fuel oil tanks with clean and environmentally friendly solar energy solutions.
Furthermore, Engineer Hisham Al-Meikhy, CEO of Millennium, stated that the company has successfully executed this unique and substantial project, featuring a system with a capacity of 1.2 MWt that will produce approximately 2,213 MWh/year. This system provides savings amounting to 380,000 Liters of diesel fuel yearly, effectively reducing 1,017 tons of CO2 emissions that would otherwise be harmful to the environment. He affirmed that this experience will be replicated in other locations across the region and the world, given the project's success and achievement of its objectives.
As affirmed by both companies, the execution of such projects will result in significant benefits for the national economy and the environment. Additionally, the expenses associated with solar thermal energy initiatives can be recovered within a span of one to three years, besides preserving the environment and utilizing local natural resources. Consequently, it is essential to disseminate and apply this type of projects in all industrial, commercial, and service sectors that employ various types of fuels to obtain thermal energy, such as large commercial complexes, hospitals, hotels, and other economic activities.
The implementation of this project in Jordan demonstrates the country's considerable potential to export solar energy solutions worldwide, owing to the availability of trained and qualified experts capable of executing such projects. Additionally, Jordan has also undertaken several renewable energy projects through local companies, positioning Jordan on the global map of renewable energy.
